Description

Introduction The Australian children's television program Play School spans more than 40 years of early childhood experience within Australia, and a retrospective view of the program highlights the emergence of different philosophical and pedagogical perspectives that impact on early childhood practice. This paper outlines the processes behind the production of Play School, the philosophical foundation for the program, and more recent considerations in response to contemporary perspectives in early childhood education. As for educators working in other early childhood contexts in Australia, the members of the Play School production team are also challenged to deconstruct past practices and interrogate uncontested assumptions about childhood experience. The complexities and contradictions which emerge offer new possibilities and challenges to explore.
